In Greek mythology, Amethyst was a young girl who became a target for the Greek God Dionysus. He became intoxicated and attempted to rape her. When Amethyst cried out to her Goddess for help, she immediately turned her into a stone known as amethyst. The name amethyst comes from the Greek word amethustos, meaning “not drunk” or “sober”; it was believed that this stone would prevent drunkenness if worn on the person or in their home.
